Wheelchair Sports Alberta (WSA) is dedicated to assisting wheelchair athletes gain access to the benefits of sport. We are a non-profit sport organization that relies on your kindness to develop the vital programs necessary to expand opportunities for Alberta’s wheelchair sport community. With your help we will continue to promote and support the technical development, leadership and integration of wheelchair athletes in Alberta and introduce new members to the benefits of physical activity.

Wheelchair sport began over 70 years ago as part of a rehabilitation program for soldiers injured in the Second World War. From there it quickly grew into a   worldwide sports movement. WSA was established in 1971 and is one of the 10 provincial branches of the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association. As the Provincial Governing Body for wheelchair sports in Alberta, WSA is responsible for a wide range of sporting activities and initiatives. These include overseeing the core sports of wheelchair basketball, athletics, tennis, rugby, and sledge hockey (along with others through the Bridging the Gap initiative introduced in 2008). The Association itself is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors, with regional representation from around the province.

Working together, ordinary people can perform extraordinary feats. They can lift things that come into their hands a little higher, a little further on toward the heights of excellence.

WSA members range from people interested in enjoying sport for fun, staying fit, or meeting new friends to those committed to competitive excellence. Under the guidance of skilled coaches members of all ages can participate in these sport programs leading to healthier, more active lifestyles and improved quality of life. Sports under the supervision of WSA also give members the opportunity to participate in local, provincial, and national competitions. It is noted with great pride that our members include wheelchair athletes who have competed and won medals at the Paralympic Games; the highest level of international competition!

To continue our programs and provide new and future members with better access to sport and recreational opportunities we ask for your support in our fundraising efforts. This year WSA has a goal to raise $285,000. These funds will go towards improving our various programs and greatly assist in ‘Bridging the Gap’ of activities available for wheelchair users.

Thank you for your interest and continued support to make wheelchair sport barrier free in Alberta.

Respectfully,

Mike Sandomirsky
